Before I started writing my position paper, I had to attend online library sessions with Emily Pagano and Alyssa. During these Library sessions, I learned how to use one search, which is the City College online Library, to find sources for my paper. I also had to write practice thesis statements and, my peers helped me choose the one that made the best sense for my topic. I ended up with this thesis statement, Harry Potter Fanfictions are a way to keep the books alive, but in some cases, some fanfictions are inappropriate. My position in the paper, supports fanfictions even some of them are inappropriate.
Throughout this writing process, I have used 3-course learning outcomes. The first learning outcome I have used is practice using various library resources, online databases, and the Internet to locate sources appropriate to your writing projects. I used one search to find two peer-reviewed sources that had to do with fanfiction. The first source was about how some fanfictions resemble porn, and the second source was how fanfictions use subcategories to give the readers a new perspective on the characters. I have also used google to find a pop culture article, which was about how the Harry Potter books would have been different had Harry been a female, which I compared to Female Harry fanfictions I have read. The second learning outcome I have used is to strengthen your source use practices (including evaluating, integrating, quoting, paraphrasing, summarizing, synthesizing, analyzing, and citing sources). I used quoting and summarizing in my paper when mentioning the sources, I found. I also had a reference page where I cited all three sources, I had in APA format. The third learning outcome I have used is to develop and engage in the collaborative and social aspects of writing processes. I have used this outcome by having Nathalie look it over, and she told me that it was good, and I needed to add more of myself into the paper, and so I did, and then I had a final draft ready.
The genre of this essay is a position paper, as I had to choose a side when it comes to fanfictions. I preferred to support Harry Potter fanfictions. The exigence of this essay is that fanfiction allows the readers to get a new perspective of the character even if the fanfiction is a pornographic one. The purpose of this essay was to explain how fanfiction is not a bad thing, and those fanfiction websites such as Archive of Our Own have restrictions, so if a minor read it, then it’s not the websites or the writer’s fault. The audience for this essay is my professor Alyssa and my peers. The context of this essay is that I needed to communicate how fanfictions are not to be seen as dark and cause members of the Harry Potter fandom to be stigmatized for reading them. The goal is that my audience understands why I support fanfictions.
